Take Advantage of This Time to Become the Most Amazing Version of Yourself

Although to a first year student it seems like college will be a long four years, in reality, it comes to an end sooner than anyone is prepared for. Whether you have made the extra effort to graduate in four years or you are finishing your degree in 5+ years, it is important to realize that this frame of time does not last and once you have graduated it is the real world.

College is a life changing experience for anyone – it is a time to make lifelong friends, find your own independence, study subjects of true interest to you and for you to learn and experience things you never were aware of beforehand. As you become comfortable in your daily routine, it is often times hard to reach out and try new things – especially as you become an upper classman.

It is important to take this time period to mold yourself into someone who you want employers and others to see you as. If you spend too much time partying and sleeping through class, what benefits did you really receive from college? Is that something that you can put on your resume?

Find things that you are truly passionate about and get involved. If you join a club just because your roommate has joined it and not because you like it, oftentimes people who are interviewing you will be able to read right through the act that you put on.

Another great way to help mold yourself into a professional is by utilizing all the tools at the Office of Career Service. Many people mistake the office to solely focused on job search, when actually it provides so much more. If you take a look on the HIRE-UT website it will be easy to find all the events and workshops that are schedules with themes such as “What Makes YOU Stand Out” and “The Right Major for You”.

Career Services is one of the most useful offices here on campus if students use it the right way. Don’t get too comfortable in your everyday routine. Get out there and visit the Office of Career Services to help shape your future.

New to Tampa!

Like many of you I am new to Tampa, FL and I knew right away this was a great place to stay. More than 60% of students who attend The University of Tampa choose to stay in Florida after graduation. Most of those Spartans stay in the Tampa Bay area.

As Manager of Corporate and Community Development my focus is building partnerships with companies and organizations. This summer I hit the ground running to meet with employers in the Tampa Bay area that are eager to hire UT talent. Here are some fascinating facts! Keep an eye out for these employers and more at on campus recruiting events brought to you by Career Services such as Fairs, Info. Sessions, Open Houses, Tables, Workshops as well as on HIRE-UT:

Bright House Networks: There’s a red phone for emergency calls for banks across Tampa Bay to request a network shut down case there is a security breach. A perk for full-time employment is free cable!

Citi: Known as “the leading global financial services company” is growing in Tampa with hundreds of positions for recent grads to fill over the next few years.

Coca-Cola: A major office is located just 15 minutes from campus and they are hiring! Employees get free cases of Coca-Cola brand beverages every month!

Glazer Children’s Museum: Recruits interns and volunteers from UT regularly. The museum features CRAFTOLOGY, an annual event just for young professionals to taste craft beers, listen to local bands and connect for a great cause all inside the inspiring atmosphere of the creative and fun experiential learning exhibits for kids.

Nordstrom: This name is eye-catching not just for style, but also for the resume with great retail and internship positions.

Northwestern Mutual: Offers a top internship program where many of the positions turn into full-time employment.

PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP: One of the world’s largest providers of Assurance, Tax and business consulting services with professional opportunities for more than just accounting majors.

Skoda Minotti, CPA: Within walking distance to campus, this local firm is growing and is featured on campus this term for On Campus Interviews!

Tech Data: Located 10 minutes from UT, a truly global company known as “one of the world's largest distributors of technology products from leading IT hardware and software producers” serving over 100 countries.

Keep an eye out for these employers on HIRE-UT.  Employers on HIRE-UT seek Spartan talent specifically… So you already have an edge! If you are curious about making the Tampa Bay area your home visit HIRE-UT (http://www.ut.edu/HIREUT) to learn more about local career opportunities.

Is your resume getting noticed?

In the Office of Career Services we sometimes hear concerns from students and alumni during the job and internship process. One of these concerns pertains to not hearing back from an employer after applying to a job or internship. An article published earlier this year on the website Career Realism, an online career magazine, discussed reasons why an employer may not be responding to your resume. The author, Jessica Hernandez, reviews some of the main reasons a resume may not be getting a response.

According to Jessica Hernandez, if your resume is not receiving a response it may be due to one of these six considerations:
1. It still has an objective statement
2. It lacks any form of personal branding
3. It's fluffy
4. Accomplishments are not highlighted
5. Duties and responsibilities have taken over
6. Metrics, facts, and figures are nowhere to be found

To learn how to avoid these resume pitfalls,  review the article and visit the Office of Career Services to have your resume reviewed.

We're down to the final four weeks of classes!

As the semester comes to a close, it’s nice to look back and see the accomplishments and look ahead to the future—new initiatives, new projects and workshops, and just new ideas in general. We try to plan events and programs that appeal to you, the students, but we know we are not always successful.  I would love to have some feedback on the programs that you found most (and least) helpful.  We can’t do much about the timing—they will always conflict with  someone's classes, no matter when we schedule them, but we would like to know what you liked and what you didn’t like.

And it’s hard to determine how best to reach you, so we could use a little help there, too.  Texting is not an option, but how else do you like to receive information?  Emails, flyers, plasmas, OSLE newsletter, Facebook, Twitter?  We know that students don’t always know about our events no matter how much we try to publicize, and, as we hire a new marketing intern for 2014-15, it would be nice for him/her to have some new ideas.

Wishing you all the best for the last few weeks of the semester, and don’t forget that we still have some great workshops left this semester—“Where does my resume really go?” and two alumni panels for jobs in science and sales. And for graduate business students, we have a Corporate Connections with a representative from ZICO (a Coca Cola company) and an alumni panel.  Check HIRE-UT for dates, places, and times!

Sadly, my time as Marketing Intern here at the Office of Career Services is about up. And as sad as I am to leave, I am happy that I will be able to pass this amazing opportunity along to the next person. This office is a great place with resources I never had a clue about, and I hope that some of you take the time to apply for this awesome opportunity, since it is probably the most optimal marketing position you will find to blend seamlessly with your experience as a student on campus here at UT. As the Marketing Intern for the Office of Career Services, you will be producing designs and projects, paid, on campus, with hours that are set by you. Paid. On Campus. Marketing Opportunity.

Applications are due by March 28th at 5 pm on HIRE UT. Applicants should have a background in marketing, advertising, design, or public relations. Adobe Creative Suite proficiency would be a big plus. You can find the application here:

A Semester of Lasts

This will be my last insightful blog post of this semester, so I feel that is fitting to talk about the end of things. For example, just last week I had my last meeting with a colleague. I recently attended my last NACA conference as a student. I’ve had my last winter break, and my last spring break is coming up. For many of you, including myself, this semester signifies your last year as a student. So, what does that mean? Moving on to bigger and better, perhaps. But also, it means that now is the time to cherish your experiences.

This is not just for those of you experiencing lasts this semester, but for every student here at UT. I implore you to take a good look at each day and approach it as a new opportunity, because as soon as it has passed it becomes an opportunity that you cannot reclaim. We here at Career Services are all about seeking opportunities, in any form, and so we hope you will take this advice to heart.

Speaking of opportunities, I am sad to announce that after spring break I will begin looking for a replacement to take over my responsibilities of Marketing Intern for the Office of Career Services. We don’t have the exact timeline lined out yet, but you can look for the application on Hire-UT the week after spring break. If you have any questions feel free to email me at Joshua.jacobs@spartans.ut.edu.
